Koreans continue to dominate Ladies Golf.

Whilst Shin Ji-yai failed to claim the Ricoh Women's British Open for the second consecutive year - which bitterly disappointed me, not only because she has raw talent, but equally importantly, she has a terrific personality - Koreans continue to dominate the game, at least in numbers. On the leaderboard, there are a staggering  eight Koreans' and in the world's top hundred, there are whopping thirty-five Koreans'. What about the USA, you might ask? Well, I am not sure how many are in the top hundred - no doubt a similar number, but out of the American contingent, there are a number of Korean Americans. Just look at the world famous Michelle Wie, or the eccentric Christina Kim. So is there is something in the Korean blood that allows them to play golf? Who knows? But it is not just Korea that are proud to host a number of women golfers; Japan and Thailand too, are home to a number of talented golfers, though Korea seems to have more of them. Nevertheless, Asia as a whole seems to be doing the right thing in building professional golfers. 

It could be seen as ironic that there is golf revival in Korea, largely because it is so expensive to play there. When Koreans come to the UK, they are often surprised at how cheap it is here to be a member at a golf club. Only a few hundred pounds, they ask?! Apparently in Korea, there are a limited number of golf courses, which means becoming a member is insanely expensive and thus, well out of reach to those, even in the middle classes.  Though, this is not to say all these golfers are from affluent backgrounds. Perhaps there are funding opportunities available to them.  One thing is for sure: any funding that is open to them is money well spent, if you ask me. Rock on!
